Commot- A common Nigerian word derived from broken English/slang, meaning “leave here” “get out” “go away”… you get the drift? and it’s usually used in scenarious where a person wishes to be assertive.

Commit- As we all know in the English language is to pledge, bind or devote yourself to a certain cause.

You may wonder where I’m going with all this, so let me break it down to you why I’m choosing this phrase- “Commit or Commot” as my mantra this year, and perhaps from now onwards.

It all started on new year’s day when I and a group of friends came together to celebrate my good friend’s birthday who was born on the 1st of January. As the dinner carried on, we talked about our vision for the new year and so many other things, and as it usually does when a group of young men and women come together, the subject of relationships came up.

As we shared our experiences and traded displeasure at varying attitudes we dislike about the opposite sex, one of the ladies aptly proclaimed that she was tired of all the games men of our generation play and then continued, “Any guy that I’m going to date this year, after 3 months had better commit or commot!” We all burst into laughter, but the phrase stuck with me, as you can imagine I’ve had my fare share of heart woes so I readily agreed and repeated: “Yes o, commit or commot!”

However, although this was initially used to refer to relationships, days later after thinking about the conversation that night, I took it a step further to include various aspects of my life. So in my case, “to commot” wouldn’t only mean leaving unfulfilling relationships, but includes unfulfilling and unrewarding things in general that stagnate my growth in life- whether in work, love, friendships, relationships or energies.

We all know someone that is all talk and no action. I hate to be that way and actively ensure that my actions back up my talk. So to you reading this post, I hope you’re not that person that is all bark and no bite, all talk and no walk or all dreams and no plans.

Whatever your reasons or excuses are in life that are keeping you from going for your goals and that which you really want, you need to tell it/make it commot.

Yes, you heard me right, it’s time TO COMMIT OR COMMOT!

…. and if you choose the latter, then you didn’t really want it anyway.
