According to Google, expectation means a strong belief that something will happen. As optimistic people, we’d like to think that when we put our all into something, the outcome would be favorable, or that it will spark a chain of event as we see fit. But what happens when that isn’t the case? How does it make us feel when someone we expected more from lets us down?

I must confess that I’ve been plagued by bouts of such feelings a couple of times this year. It’s been like a rat race to accomplish my set goals and as you can imagine, it sucks even more when those outcomes are out of my control.

Sometimes we feel like we’re constantly putting a lot in and getting meagre results in return. I know I’ve sometimes felt this way. But what keeps me going? What keeps me churning and turning the wheel despite these unmet expectations?

I’ll tell you what, I don’t expect much from people. Yes it sucks, and no it doesn’t mean I’m not optimistic. What it means is that I understand I can only control my actions and reactions, so while I continue working hard and hoping for the best, the reactions I get from others along the way is simply a bonus because I must first work hard for myself and not for the validation from others.

It’s really disappointing when we get less from those we expect more than average from, but so what? I remind myself- No one owes you shit. Face your work, the magic eventually happens.

And then everyone would want in and you’ll be in a better position to chose who’s allowed in or not.

Just a few thoughts. How do you handle expectations?
